Become a PI
Join our community of student volunteers who keep The Hive running.
What is a Peer Instructor?
Peer Instructors (PIs) are the student volunteers who staff The Hive Makerspace. Our PIs are trained to operate our machines and are dedicated to helping other students make their ideas a reality. PIs come from a wide range of majors, expertise levels, and backgrounds — don’t hesitate to ask them for help!
While there are no technical prerequisites to becoming a PI other than being a Georgia Tech student, we look for people who are passionate about making and committed to helping others.
PI Responsibilities
- 3 volunteer hours on-shift per week — keeping the space staffed and running
- Actively teach and assist users when on shift
- Complete required technical training during the training period at the start of each semester
- Community involvement — running workshops, volunteering at outreach events, and more
PI Perks
Becoming a PI comes with some great benefits:
- After-hours access to the Hive
- Project funding for advanced personal projects
- PI socials — regular community events with your fellow PIs
- Host workshops — share your skills with the broader GT community
- Space improvement opportunities — directly shape the Hive’s growth
How to Apply
The PI application typically opens for a few weeks before the end of the spring and fall semesters. It is advertised through our mailing list and department channels, so keep an eye out!
The application period for Fall 2026 PIs has ended. If you submitted an application, we will be in touch according to the timeline above. Applications run every fall and spring semester, and prospective PIs apply to start the following semester.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I be a PI for this current semester?
No — PIs apply to start the following semester. If applications are currently open, you would begin in the next semester.
How much technical experience should I have before applying?
None required! PIs come from all technical backgrounds. You will receive full equipment training when you join.
What can I learn as a PI?
As a PI you will become proficient with many of the Hive’s tools. You can also pursue becoming a Master Peer Instructor (MPI) — a volunteer who has specialized expertise in a specific technical area like laser cutting, PCB fabrication, 3D printing, electronics benchtop, crafts, machine shop, or embedded systems.
